Craigie Aitchinson was a Scottish painter. When asked, Aitchinson said, "I do mostly black people, dogs, religious pictures and still lifes." Aitchinson also did some landscapes. He is mostly known for his bright colors, and spare canvases with crucifixes or dogs. Aitchinson's simple paintings were sometimes dismissed by snooty English art critics. Aitchinson's use of colour is said to have been influenced by the early 20th-century group of Scottish colourists, as well as Matisse. Top photo:
